Those are are just a few words that have been used to describe the Philippine president, Rodrigo Duterte.

Rodrigo Duterte and his straight-talking, no-nonsense style of leadership has made him a hero to many in the Philippines.

But his brutal, authoritarian approach to politics and law enforcement have raised serious human rights concerns - as well as threaten the delicate balance of alliances in the region.

In the 1970s and 80s, Davao City was known as the "murder capital" of the Philippines. It was incredibly dangerous city, where communist insurgents and government forces would openly kill each other in broad daylight.

Rodrigo Duterte wanted to stop this -- by any means necessary.

So Rodrigo Duterte became a prosecutor for the city from 1977 - 1986, and worked to rid the city of criminal activity. He was so determined to lock up the very people he blamed for Davao's crime rate, that he was willing to do whatever it took -- even if it meant breaking the law himself.

This ruthless style of accomplishing his goals made Duterte a popular figure among Davao's population and would become a common trend throughout his life.

But Duterte had his eyes set on more than being a prosecutor. He would eventually become the Davao City mayor. He was elected on a platform focused on restoring peace and stability to Davao City.

But shortly after he became mayor, bodies began to pile up in the streets.

An armed vigilante group known as the Davao Death Squad began killing small-time drug dealers and petty criminals. Allegedly, the group also targeted Duterte's political opponents.

But he continued to be re-elected. He was mayor of Davao City for seven terms, becoming one of the country's longest-serving mayors. And his brutal campaign to stomp out crime only escalated as his time in office grew.

And he wasn't done yet. Join us as we continue to explore how Rodrigo Roa Duterte continued to rise to power.

This comment section is just plain eww. People can’t take it when we don’t like the president. When is it okay to kill people huh? Drugs is a health problem, not something you could just shoot to solve.

8:55 made my day! haha. I am a Filipino and an expatriate living in the middle east and I came from the same town as Pres. Duterte in the Philippines. I can vouch for that pres. duterte is the greatest president of our country. Try to visit Davao city, It is very safe there. There is a rule of law and it is a democratic country. Drug addicts and rapists are gone. Your sources in making this video are biased. Please do your homework next time. Thumbs down on this video.

You got the best SOURCE to serve this video's purpose. The purpose of this video is to lambast our president one-sidedly. You should ask yourself a question, why do the people of the Philippines support such violent action to crack down illegal drugs in our country?
This is the answer, It got to the point where the streets are not safe, but the worst was that even in the comforts of your home you're still not safe from the attacks of drug addicts. People were crying out loud for a real peace and order to stop these addicts, and so Duterte was called upon by the Filipino's to run for president. He never wanted to run for president. Who's fault is it? Filipino's fault? Is it our fault to fight fire with fire? We Filipino's deserve to live a safer place to live and for that to happen, we need to make our country a dangerous place for criminals to live in. There are two choices here, innocent people getting robbed, raped, killed and extorted by criminals? OR dead bodies of criminals on the streets? I'd rather choose the latter.
NOTE: Justice system is failing and falling into corruption where courts have price tags of freedom. Imagine drugs are made inside our biggest jail facility. Our government was dysfunctional. If the president wasn't Duterte, we might be the same with Mexico right now.
Next time, feature the other side of Duterte. He made government universities free from tuition and other miscellaneous fees. He made tax easier for the poor. Made business documents and government transactions faster, you get a business permit in just 3 days, like you can start your business in just 3 days. Made Boracay clean and other major places to visit like Manila bay clean and Pasig river clean. And there are more to mention. People are tired of listening and hearing out one-sided news or documentaries. There so many of them, make your channel a bit different, more fairer, more honest and be more diligent. Don't setttle for one source, take a look at the other side of the coin.
