     yesterday

Whenever they show a quick clip of the Cubs winning the World Series, they always show that last out grounded and fielded by Bryant and the dogpile celebration. I think part of it is Buck actually says the Cubs win the World Series so it gets the point across in the most obvious way. But for me, the most iconic moment of them winning is right after Zobrist drives home the go-ahead run in the 10th and the camera cuts to Rizzo with his hands on his head and he says oh my God right into the camera. It was such an amazing interactive moment in sports because I think everyone watching on tv outside of Cleveland felt the exact same way. Oh my God, this is really going to happen, isn't it?! We all became that little kid on Christmas. And Rizzo wasn't immune just because he was playing. In fact, he had said earlier in the game on a Fox live mic segment to David Ross that he was in a glass case of emotion with all his nerves. Ross wryly replied that it was only going to get worse. Somehow Rizzo still played quite well in this game in spite of those nerves. And this moment right here also served as the payoff from that little exchange.

You don't expect that kind of payoff from a previous personal dialogue moment captured on a live sporting event, that's the way sports movies normally work, not actual sports. It's just amazing how whether its the Cubs breaking their curse, the Red Sox breaking theirs (yes, at our expense), the Cleveland Cavaliers breaking the Cleveland sports curse, these scenarios almost always seems to unfold in the most breathtaking, theatrically dramatic way possible, a real life sports movie. Like the sports gods want to make sure the payoff is worth the wait. Reason #108 why sports is amazing I suppose.

I have this whole series on a Blu-Ray collection, every year I pop it into my PlayStation to rewatch the whole thing, makes me nervous ever time even though I know my Cubbies won it all. Thank you Cubs.
