  • He never finished medical school, but for the villagers of Rael in Cambodia's remote countryside, Chek Cheoum is a lifesaver.

He only charges what his patients can afford, and is always nearby.

With 0.2 doctors for every 1,000 people, Cambodia has one of the world's lowest ratios, forcing many to rely on unlicensed physicians like Cheoum.

But when a village suffered a widespread HIV outbreak after contaminated needles were used on patients, the government banned all unlicensed medics.

101 East uncovers Cambodia's failed healthcare system and its reliance on doctors with no licence to heal.

I love your documentaries, true reporting but in this like many cases what those two need is CONDOMS, stop f..ing and having kids if you don't have money and this for everyone, so everyone else has to deal with their promblems?

This is the perfect example of the gap between government and those on the ground. The solution is to improve communication.

So if they are licensed, they won't contaminate their patients. That is one of the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard. Do some more research and you will be surprise. Even in some of the best medical institutions in the U.S. contaminate their patients. "C-" for this report.

Paracetamol was not good enough so she went to get AIDS. The irony. Why trust a licenced doctor when you can get a shot by an unlicenced one.

Many things are the same in Thailand where I have lived for 20+ years. They always say "no money," as they light up another cigarette, down another beer, and ride away on their motorcycle. A big difference between the countries is that there are medical facilities all over Thailand which include hospitals, doctors, and government-sponsored medical centres.
'nuf sed. One thing they have in common, which prevents progress in many areas of society is education. Both governments try to keep the uneducated under their thumb to prevent them from progressing in an upward mobile manner.

Why do these people have so many kids? If she knew he wasn’t licensed she should take the good with the bad.

We just can’t called them the “ Unlicensed Doctor” because majority of them were never trained in a proper institute, or even understand about the pharmacology at all. Especially, Side effects or drugs mechanisms. They just know how to treat the symptoms and which medicine to use. Untrained Health Care provider??
